I hope that your summer is going well and that you are getting out and walking the La Playa Trail and perhaps taking your kayak, paddle board or small boat down to our float to launch. We have had some really nice days for these water sports. Or maybe you’re fishing from the dock with your kids or grandkids. These are all things you can do as a member of LPYC!
Now I’d like to bring you up to date with news about the La Playa Yacht Club.
As the newly elected and installed Commodore, I want to inform you of recent initiatives your Board has directed. Of course, I am in full support of these goals.
1. We need a robust website- perhaps with an interactive capability with more news and more community exposure. We have a member working on this.
2. We are working to increase the list of yacht clubs which will allow us Guest Dining privileges.
3. We need to raise funds for a new ramp at our dock. We need to replace some of our cap-rails and do some painting. We asked for member donations to the dock maintenance fund when we sent out invoices for your annual dues. A number of you did respond positively.
We thank everyone who has donated for this – we appreciate your donations!
4. The Port currently wants us to carry an insurance policy for $1,000,000 coverage. We have asked them to consider a lower coverage amount given the very small risk we pose. We have not found an insurance company for our marine profile yet but we will keep looking. The annual premium has increased another $500 from last year, so this year’s premium quote is $8,275. In the past, the annual premium was in the range of $3,800. The premium increase is very difficult to manage. As a result, I’ve asked the members who occupy our four-side ties at the float to each voluntarily contribute $1,000 per side-tie toward this year’s insurance premium.
5. We believe we could receive more donations to LPYC if we could establish a non -profit educational foundation. This would require developing some maritime-related educational activities. We have some ideas, and if you have suggestions, please contact a board member.
6. We are also working to organize more member activities so that we get together more often. Our annual Membership meeting will be on September 7th in our garden facing La Playa Cove along the La Playa Trail across from the Fairy Tree swing. It will be a BBQ buffet dinner. We look forward to seeing you there! Additional themes to consider for next year’s get-togethers include a wine tasting fundraiser with contributions from local wineries, a dock party and so on. We welcome your ideas, contributions and your comradeship. I hope to meet many of you at our fundraiser at the Point Loma Assembly at 3035 Talbot St on August 2nd from 5-7pm. We will share a presentation of the Star Clipper Cruise program and this year we are initiating a Commodore’s Cruise to Malta. As it happens, Malta was featured in Sunday’s UT Arts and Culture Section. Star Clipper Cruises offers many cruise itineraries. Learn more on August 2nd and on Sept. 7th!
We will draw the winning ticket at our Annual meeting September 7th. Tickets for the drawing are available for purchase now.
All the best and may you enjoy fair winds and following seas!
