Commodore’s letter Summer 2024

Greetings from La Playa Cove!

I hope you’ve walked the trail, visited the float or have been enjoying your boats this summer!

Commodore’s Cruise 2024 – Eight of your fellow members cruised together out of Malta this past April aboard the beautiful Royal Clipper, a 5-masted passenger sailing vessel.  We had a fabulous time! Great on-board accommodations and excellent food and service.  We all enjoyed the live pianist every afternoon and evening during dinner.  The ship offered well-organized shore excursions and a warm friendly staff. We felt that the cruise was very, very attractively priced and good value, so the group wants to return and cruise with Royal Clipper again next year. Stay tuned for details soon about the Commodore’s Cruise 2025!  We hope you can all join us!

Social Get Together – Our club will have a social dinner event at the Bixler bayside garden at La Playa Cove on September 19, 2024, from 5-8pm. Last year was great fun for everyone and we hope to build on the tradition annually.  More info to follow…  By the way, we would appreciate any volunteers to help make the event special for everyone!!!  Contact Laplayayc@gmail.com if you are able to help out.

LPYC Business Meeting – We will have our annual meeting on October 24th, 4-8pm, at The Point Loma Assembly on Talbot St. We will introduce new members and formally vote them into the club. We will have details on the Commodore’s Cruse and update everyone on our progress with the dock and other club business. SAVE the DATE and watch for the invitation. Last year we had a GREAT turn out of members who enjoyed socializing and meeting each other.

A Brief Update

  • We’ve commenced repair work on our pier and gate assembly.
  • We’ve substantially cleaned, weeded and trimmed landscaping on the La Playa trail from San Antonio’s Street end north to the fairy tree swing.  The whole area is now a complement to our neighborhood.
  • We have received many kind compliments from the public, as well as new members and donations in recognition of our initiative. As you know, the La Playa trail and picket fence area and street end are all port property.
  • We finally received a street address from the city of San Diego, 655 San Antonio Ave, San Diego, ca 92106.  We installed a lockable mailbox at the pier-head.
  • With the new address we can apply for a more favorable premium on our insurance policy. We are hopeful we can get this policy and cut our premium by about half.
  • At this time, we have full reciprocity with Coronado Yacht club, Royal Hawaiian Yacht Club, Lahaina Yacht Club (facility burned down; we sent a small donation and new burgee in support), Antigua Yacht Club, and Silver Gate Yacht Club has welcomed us when we identify ourselves with our LPYC card.  We will work to expand this list.   We continue to suggest that our two nearby yacht clubs extend day guest privileges to our membership.
  • La Playa YC membership also includes a membership to Yacht Clubs of America, and I understand several members have utilized the reciprocal Privileges as well.
  • Work on our new website is yielding benefits. Many of you used it to renew your membership or to update your contact and email information. Thank you 😊!!

We appreciate your support and encouragement.
