December letter from the Commodore

Our “Deck the Dock” project is now shining brightly in La Playa Cove – there are low-voltage white icicle mini-lights lining the rails, and colored lights around the gate. The lights come on at dusk and go off at about 10 o’clock each day. As a separate contribution from yours truly, the Stephens Sedan Cruiser Voilá at the dock also sports festive holiday lighting.

More spruce-up, the float has been washed and is very presentable now for launching and landing your small craft at the dock, fishing, swimming or sunbathing (in December?), or just enjoying the La Playa Cove activity. As a community contribution, we’ll be cleaning up the Port property (not part of our lease). Al and Dotsy Baber have volunteered to have their gardener clean up weeds and remove ice-plant from the fenced area, and new member Dr. Darryl Little has volunteered to clean up the entrance to the pier. The flagpole proudly flies a bright new burgee in thanks!

We have a small fix in the works now to make the gate swing closed and lock properly. This has been made possible by Frank Taliaferro’s efforts and some talented tradesmen. Please ensure the gate closes and fully locks after you pass through, by lifting the gate just slightly so it locks.

Thank you, to all the spruce-up helpers! We hope the whole effort pleases everyone and gives La Playa Yacht Club a nice fresh outlook for the upcoming new year. Along with the ramp replacement, we have other small projects in mind, and the Board welcomes your thoughtful input.

The Board will host a New Year Welcome for our members in January at the Point Loma Assembly Hall on Talbot St. Sally Bixler, President of the Assembly, will coordinate with the Assembly Board so we receive a reduced rental charge as a non-profit Yacht Club in the La Playa area.

Board Director Tracy Anderson has been instrumental in bringing together a group of 11 LPYC members and friends for a Commodore’s Cruise. We will set sail on the Star Clippers’ sailing vessel, the Royal Clipper, to Old World Mediterranean ports April 25-30, 2024. If you are interested in joining the group, please see the flyer on the website and contact Tracy for more details.

We have several new member applications in the works. This is exciting, and a great way to begin 2024!

May the New Year bring You and Your Kin Fair Winds and Following Seas!!
