I live in Pacific Beach and work in biotech as a facility manager. Summer Greetings from La Playa Cove! We hope you’re enjoying a wonderful summer! The La Playa Yacht Club Board has been hard at work this year completing several major upgrades. Our dock has been updated, the ramp replaced, and a new gate installed. Whew—what a project! Take a walk along the trail and see the improvements for yourself. Fundraising Success! Overlooking the La Playa dock in Commodore Bixler’s garden, we held a live auction to raise money for much-needed repairs to our pier.  We raised close to $5000!

Greetings from La Playa Cove! I hope you’ve walked the trail, visited the float or have been enjoying your boats this summer! Commodore’s Cruise 2024 – Eight of your fellow members cruised together out of Malta this past April aboard the beautiful Royal Clipper, a 5-masted passenger sailing vessel.  We had a fabulous time! Great on-board accommodations and excellent food and service.  We all enjoyed the live pianist every afternoon and evening during dinner.  The ship offered well-organized shore excursions and a warm friendly staff. We felt that the cruise was very, very attractively priced and good value, so the group wants to return and cruise with Royal Clipper again next year. You asked for more club events, so we have responded! Fall Meeting! We had the annual meeting and dinner in September at Casa Bixler for the first time in several years to the enjoyment of about 45 members. Thank you Sally Bixler, Bill and Ellen Ewing, Larry Calder and Frank and Sam Taliferro for setup, lights and Hawaiian music. Our “Deck the Dock” project is now shining brightly in La Playa Cove – there are low-voltage white icicle mini-lights lining the rails, and colored lights around the gate. The lights come on at dusk and go off at about 10 o’clock each day. As a separate contribution from yours truly, the Stephens Sedan Cruiser Voilá at the dock also sports festive holiday lighting. More spruce-up, the float has been washed and is very presentable now for launching and landing your small craft at the dock, fishing, swimming or sunbathing (in December?), or just enjoying the La Playa Cove activity. Our May 24 event at the Bay Club was attended by over 50 people, including some potential new members. That is great to see, and all of you, our current members, need to think about sponsoring friends you think might enjoy our unique club.  We have raised over $2,200 in ticket sales, but we are still a long way from replacing our ramp. La Playa Yacht Club and Star Clippers joined forces to offer a Unique Sailing Experience to one lucky winner.  Three fund raising events were held in 2023 and tickets for the giveaway were sold at each gathering.  About 200 tickets were sold for a 7-day sailing on Star Clipper or Star Flyer in the Caribbean or Costa Rica for two passengers. Almost $5000 was raised for much needed repairs to our dock.  Thank you to Beth from Star Clippers and the entire board and organizing committee for making these events so successful.
